Some Basic Healthy Eating Tips

Most of us are health conscious but do we really know what are we getting out of the food we consume? Lack of knowledge of basic diet can be really bad for our health. Sitting with a pouch of cookies or a pack of some useless snack and eating mindlessly may be due to habit or anxiety. But we really need to keep a check on what we devour.

Though, today there are so many delicacies easily available in the market, it is always better to cook something good at home and relish it. It is not a rocket science to know what is good for your health. These are some simple and basic healthy eating tips which we can follow easily and stay fit:

Pen down the food items that you have consumed in past 2 to 3 days. Try to study what you have consumed and if there are such food items that are not good like chips, cookies, pastries,  ice creams or some fatty stuff, try to avoid them and instead opt for low calorie snacks that are easily available.

Fruits and Vegetables are one of the most essential parts of our diet. Include at least 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet daily.  We can prepare so many dishes using fresh fruits and vegetables. Now it’s not that difficult. We can shred some of the veggies and top them into the sandwich. Or may be stew them and use them in the soups. Fruits can be eaten raw between the meals.

Smoothies and Juices like orange or pomegranate or pineapple can quench our thirst and keep us refreshed.

Reduce the intake of fatty and oily snacks gradually from your diet. Some fats are good and some bad for our health. Mono unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are good fats. They are found in safflower, sunflower seeds, nuts, olives, peanuts, sesame, avocados etc. Saturated fats when consumed increase the blood cholesterol levels and are not good for our heart. They are mostly found in animal foods like pork, ham, beef, poultry, butter, lamb, dairy products and in some plant oils like palm oils, coconut oils, kernel which are mainly used in the preparation of bakery products like cakes, muffins, cookies etc. Include whole grains in the diet as they are rich source of fibre. Dietary Fibre is very beneficial. It helps in preventing constipation, the blood glucose levels are improved, reduces the risk of heart attacks and it also adds bulk to the food we consume thus it gives a satiety feeling which reduces the overall calorie intake.

Always avoid eating salty foods like potato chips and other salty snacks. Salt, if consumed in higher quantity, it causes water retention in our body and there is a temporary weight gain. Excess intake of salt increases the risk of high blood pressure.

We can never eat a perfect diet but we can always try to eat a balance diet. Follow the healthy eating tips by including fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, fibre and other healthy food and thus allowing a regular healthy eating pattern. Drink at least 5 to 6 glasses of water daily. Avoid empty calorie foods like sugar beverages, candies, chocolates etc, to keep you healthy and young. If you have a sweet tooth you can sometimes indulge in dark chocolates!! Dark chocolate has antioxidant properties,reduces blood pressure and is good for your heart!!
